Therapy for Recurring Relationship Conflict

Stuck in the same fight? Talk about what hurts without another damaging fight

You bring up something that matters. Your partner hears criticism. One of you pushes harder to be understood while the other becomes defensive or pulls away. Before long, the conversation is about how you are talking, and the original concern remains unresolved.

You want to feel heard, address problems, and trust that a disagreement will not take over your evening or leave you disconnected for days.

At Couples Chat Therapy, I help partners understand what keeps these arguments going and practice different ways of responding when conversations become difficult.

Do conversations keep turning into conflict?

You bring something up hoping to feel heard. Before long, you’re defending yourself, raising your voice, or giving up on the conversation. The issue stays unresolved, and you feel further apart. Couples therapy for recurring relationship conflict gives you space to address concerns like these:

  • A small disagreement quickly turns into a fight about everything that has gone wrong.
  • You explain your feelings, but the conversation shifts to defending intentions or arguing over details.
  • One of you pushes to keep talking while the other shuts down or walks away.
  • You hold back concerns because you expect an argument.
  • You say things in anger that leave hurt long after the disagreement ends.
  • You take a break from the conversation, but never return to resolve it.
  • Apologies bring temporary relief, but the same argument happens again.
  • You miss feeling close and don’t know how to reach each other without another fight.

What happens between you when the argument takes over?

You may be arguing about chores, money, sex, parenting, or time together. Underneath the disagreement, one of you may be wondering, “Do I matter to you?” The other may be thinking, “Will anything I do ever be enough?”

Those experiences can be hard to explain in the moment. Hurt comes out as criticism. Feeling overwhelmed turns into silence. Attempts to get reassurance become demands. Each person responds to what the other is doing, and the conversation moves further from what either of you needed.

You may still care deeply about each other and feel worn down by how you handle conflict.  Both can be true.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at hello@coupleschattherapy.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We can work with that. In couples therapy, we will look at what happens before the shutdown, how each of you responds, and what helps you stay engaged. We can develop a way to pause when needed and return to the concern so it does not remain unfinished.

I will listen to both of you and pay attention to how you affect each other. I will also name harmful behavior and address accountability. Understanding your relationship pattern does not mean assuming that responsibility is equal.

Recurring arguments are a central focus of my relationship therapy work. We will examine how the conversation unfolds, what remains unresolved, and what each person needs the other to understand. Then we will practice specific changes in how you raise concerns, respond, and repair.
